Alix is a highly experienced ADR Specialist with over 40 years of experience in Asia, specializing in strategic planning, stakeholder management, and networking within the legal and construction sectors. She is a skilled mediator, having worked on numerous commercial and family cases as both a sole mediator and co-mediator. Alix is deeply passionate about promoting the use of mediation globally and founded Mediation Chambers to collaborate with mediators worldwide. She is increasingly asked to speak at various mediation events globally and has jointly written an article on the development of mediation in Nepal. She is committed to growing the practice of mediation globally as well as helping to grow it in developing countries and works with practitioners, governments and students to this end.
She founded the first ICC Mediation in Hong Kong, focusing on providing students with experience as advocates and mediators. She has also founded MediateWise, an International Mediation Competition which provides training in mediation as a mediator and as an advocate as well as the practice for students to get some experience. She also was one of the founder and is now the Director of the APAC Vis Pre-moot which provides a platform for students to be trained in arbitration as well as giving them the practice to take this forward.
Additionally, Alix has served as a Tribunal Secretary to a leading authority in arbitration and mediation in Hong Kong, handling cases administered by the ICC and the HKIAC. She has also assisted a prominent arbitrator in CIETAC arbitrations.
In addition to her work with law firms and clients in mediation and arbitration, Alix has liaised with the government on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and Dispute Resolution Advisor (DRA) appointments, as well working with them on a number of events in arbitration and mediation. She has also played a key role in developing practices within firms and establishing connections with institutions, governments, and practitioners globally to advance the field of dispute resolution.
Mrs Justice Abha Patel serves on the Court of Appeal of Zambia, where she was appointed on 3 April 2023 after earlier serving on the High Court bench, including as Judge-in-Charge of the Commercial Division at Kitwe. She holds an LL.B from the University of Zambia and an LL.M from the University of Cambridge, and is admitted to the Zambian Bar as well as the Roll of Solicitors of the Supreme Court of England and Wales.
In 2016 she was conferred the rank of State Counsel, becoming only the third woman in Zambia to receive that honour and the only one then in private practice. A qualified mediator and arbitrator, she is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK), has led the Court-Annexed Mediation programme and is a founder member of the CIArb Zambia Branch. She has also trained mediators and arbitrators across the region.
Outside the courtroom, she undertook a charity ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro in 2018, reaching the summit at 5,895 metres. Her career reflects a blend of judicial excellence, ADR leadership and international legal experience.
